South By South Jets: The Planes Invade SXSW
This weekend my Jet Life Recordings family took SXSW by storm with a weekend full of great performances from almost the whole family!!! We arrived in town Thursday and set out to see what was poppin’ in Austin. After a long delay in getting our lodging, we hit the streets, hitting up The Belmont to see our brother Smoke DZA perform. Trees were plentiful in the green room and I made sure I got my fill of the potent smoke (LMAO). Smoke was killing shit when the sound abruptly stopped. Apparently, the venue management shut the event down to prepare for another event. Smoke tells the crowd “I guess thats my time, all I know is BET wouldn’t have let this happen like this, blame the promoter, #JetLife.” and we leave to get ready for our set later that night.
After grabbing some grub and smoking more trees, we headed to La Zona Rosa for the Warner Sound event. As always, the crowd was very Jet-Friendly, as hands were in the air with extended pinkies and thumbs and the room began to get real “foggy”. Curren$y ripped through the 20 minute set and left the crowd wanting more. Afterwards, we set out to do a late night set at the Raekwon show, and this is where we hit a snag in the plan. Apparently, the security didn’t grasp the concept that we all were artists due to perform in a few minutes.
These goofs stopped all of us with the exception of Spitta from entering the building. Without elaborating too much, lets say tempers flared, voices were raised, security guards got pushed around and cursed, and we left without doing the set, much to the dismay of the promoter, who we left outside begging for us to come back. That was how our Day One ended.
The next day we all laughed about what transpired the night before and got back in the fray that was SXSW.We barely missed our brother Nesby Phips’ set at District, but Spitta scored a nice gig at the Workaholics Mansion Party that evening, which we smashed effortlessly, as Spitta, Trademark, Young Roddy, Cornerboy P,and Fiend all went in, much to the delight of the crowd. Afterwards, we set out to hit the Vibe House where Smoke was performing. I Dj’ed the set while Smoke set the stage ablaze with a killer set that saw him bring out Spitta as well as A$AP Rocky for an action packed time. Afterwards, we did the same thing at a rooftop event before butting Day Two to bed…
Saturday was spent doing more things off-site, as Smoke hosted the Smokers’ Club t shirt release event at Complete. I got to meet Big K.R.I.T and his DJ, Wally Sparks and their team. Afterwards we headed to the Austin Rec Center for the Hoop x Hang celebrity basketball game to rep The Smokers’ Club team. Young Roddy and Smoke both had impressive showings as the team went to the finals, where they fell in a controversial final round to the Hard Knock team. Good times were had even in defeat.
We then went to prepare for the Jet Life SXSW Showcase at Haven. We get to the venue and the 1st thing we see was the NO SMOKING, NO DRUGS, ZERO TOLERANCE sign. Lets just say, for a while, those signs were ignored with a blessing from the venue owner. But some security bum who takes his job way too seriously decided to call the police, but we were all finished and in our VIP section by the time a whole precinct came through the venue, flashlights shining. They left without causing incident and we got to the business of Jet Livin’.
The show went great, although they kept trying to cut our time. Curren$y had a show in Tallahassee so he left earlier that day, so Trademark, Roddy, Fiend, Cornerboy P, Smoke DZA, and Sir Michael Rocks all held the stage down and killed it!!!! Afterwards we took one last look at SXSW and made our way back to the hotel.
…and that was how we turned South x Southwest into South x SouthJets!!!! See ya when the tour starts!!!! #JetLife2
